Ok ..so yesterday was one of those saturdays where I crave to be alone and visit the 'real' Mumbai. Well I also had to do some cable/cords shopping for my office...so the best destination was Lamington road ...and best commute was our 'aamchi local'. I reached Andheri station at around noon and was to board a fast train to Churchgate.....looking at the most headlines on nearby book stalls ...a thought struck me on how safe are we in Mumbai...considering the recent bomb blasts...our dear Mumbai police should be having a busy time..however all I could find is a vacant post and few hundred people crossing the post every minute...I also saw a few people carrying huge sacs and packed containers ...not a single person objected or say anything...I had this feeling on whether we all think that we are immune to terror ....or we have taken freedom and security for granted? Long back in Moscow after the subway bombing...I could actually see local people so alert that an old man carrying an unusual packet was asked by one of the commuters on what was he carrying and to surprise the old man cooperated and agreed to this since this was for mutual benefit or security....other incident was a lady carrying a huge bag was highlighted by a kid to the 'Metro police Guard' who promptly stopped the lady and checked the bag. We have two problems ....we dont report and we rarely have anyone to report to. I think we can work on the first one atleast which is in our control.
For a populous country like India...police, security agencies etc. will never be enough until we involve local people in our intelligence infrastructure and cultivate a new habit of being alert and proactive.
